Meet the Women Behind Hag Films

Championing bold storytelling and climate narratives, our team combines decades of experience in writing, directing, and script editing. Together, we create stories that inspire action and redefine representation in film and TV.

Sharon Burrell

All of Sharon’s screenplays are climate fiction, infused with comedy. She has a Masters in Psychology, specialising in how storytelling impacts our relationship to the environment and how we respond to climate disruption. So she is immersed in the risks we currently face, and the solutions available to us.

The first of her short film scripts, GLITCHED, is doing the 2025 festival circuit, produced by Making Productions who also co-produced theatre with Sharon’s company, To The Moon.

To The Moon developed new writing for theatre, stand up comedy and cabaret for over a decade. Their most successful production, directed by Sharon, was OLD FOOLS which became the Independent’s “Pick of London Theatre” for the entirety of its run.

Her first solo short film, THE FOLKESTONE LADIES’ EROTIC FICTION CLUB, which is also a proof of concept for a recurring TV series, shoots in June 2025, directed by Emmy award winner Emelie Mahdavian.

The TV pilot and series bible FREYA were created with the support of Development Executive Ellen Parsonage at Rockall Films and Joe Lidster (screenwriter – DOCTOR WHO, TORCHWOOD). It made the final 10% in the BBC’s most recent Open Call for scripts. Her first feature film treatment (THE CONFUSED SEA) was developed through Sundance Collab, under the tutelage of Emmy award winning writer Trey Ellis and director Ani Simon-Kennedy.

Her concept for an immersive game play experience made it to final interview stage in the BFI-funded programme “Develop Create XR.”

Sharon previously had a long career in the legal and financial services industries as a communications and business development consultant. She has a particular talent for relationship management and strategic partnership building, as well as budget management. She applied this experience in theatre production and is now transferring her skillset to film.

She is also one of those dangerous childfree cat ladies.

Cat Muir

As a writer and Script Editor, Cat has over 20 years’ experience in the film and TV industry consulting on book adaptations, script editing HETV series and writing / editing international productions from WAKING THE DEAD to SPECIAL COUPLE, the first Chinese/British feature co-production with Zephyr Films, SMG China and Screen Northern Ireland.

Cat’s crime procedural pilot THE ASH PIT propelled her to the final 14 in the BBC Drama Writers Programme in 2020 and laid the groundwork for enduring relationships with BBC Studios and several independent production houses.

As a Director, Cat has helmed two documentaries in Oman, the first of which, THE CAMEL RACE, saw her spending five months living with a group of Bedouin Camel Trainers, travelling across the Arabian Peninsula to document the latter days of their way of life as it was threatened by economic and social policies across the Gulf Region. The second film, THE CITY OF WINCHESTER, documented the efforts of a group of British divers to find and recover the wreck of the first British ship sunk in World War I, off the coast of Yemen, demanding a high level of skills from underwater cinematography to managing reluctant officials.

Cat has also made a number of music videos for artists such as Del Amitri and Piney Gir, creating a range of worlds from in-studio acoustic grunge to high fantasy.

Turning to firstly video editing on commercials, documentaries and music videos before crossing into writing, and latterly script editing, Cat has an overview of the entire filmmaking process from script to screen through her career and, after raising two children (and a cat and a dog), is now unleashing that knowledge with her fellow Hag, Sharon Burrell.
